What is RP Game Therapy?

Roleplay game (or RPG) therapy uses storytelling to enable clients to safely explore their thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

Sometimes the events that happen in our lives are hard to talk about. Many avoid counselling and seeking help due to feeling uncomfortable engaging in traditional talking therapies. This is where RPG therapy can help...

Why RPG Therapy?

Resonating with characters from books, tv, films, games, etc. is a pretty universal experience. We cry with them, laugh with them and often take their experiences and learn from them. RPG Therapy takes this a step further and allows you to process, and learn from, your experiences via your own character.

At Tabletop Therapy, you will work with a fully qualified (and MBACP registered) therapist to explore your issues behind the safety of your character, in a world and story that you create together. During your adventure, your character provides a 'buffer', or third party, between you and your difficult thoughts and feelings; enabling you to keep distance from the overwhelming experiences.

Studies have shown RPG therapy is effective in reaching those who may struggle with traditional one-to-one talking therapies - such as those with autism and ADHD. Your therapist won't be sat opposite you expectantly waiting for you to talk. Together, you will engage in a story, taking the focus away from 'you' and towards your challenges. Most importantly, it's fun! Therapy no longer has to be something you dread.

We use a range of skills in session (depending on what you prefer), from verbal storytelling to using traditional tabletop roleplaying tools (such as dice and maps). No prior roleplay game experience is necessary! Your therapist will take you through it at your own pace.
